Empowering Multilingual Middle School Writers with AI-Assisted Essay Instruction

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT when used in essay instruction for multilingual English Language Arts (ELA) middle school students. The study involved 15 multilingual (ML) middle schoolers, who engaged in a four-week intervention where they utilized ChatGPT to receive real-time feedback, suggestions, and language support while completing essay writing tasks. Semi-structured interviews and observational notes are used in the data collection that capture the students' perceptions and experiences with ChatGPT in their writing process. The thematic analysis revealed three key findings: students' increased confidence and capability in their writing, improvements in their language skills, and enhanced engagement and motivation due to the AI tool. The implications of this study underscore the potential of AI-assisted instruction in language arts, particularly in enhancing student writing confidence, engagement, and motivation.
