Digital Shift: A Multiple Case Study on Journalists’ Evolving Gatekeeping Roles: A Basis For Coverage and Reporting Primer

Abstract

The rapid digital transformation of the media landscape has significantly redefined journalism, particularly in the realm of political reporting. This dissertation, Digital Shift: Political Journalists' Evolving Gatekeeping Roles, explores how Filipino political journalists adapt to media convergence and technological disruption. Focusing on reporters covering the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches across print, radio, television, and digital platforms, the study examines how gatekeeping evolves in a digital-first environment.

Anchored in Gatekeeping Theory, Technological Determinism, and Media Convergence Theory, the research investigates how platform integration, algorithmic pressures, and participatory audiences reshape editorial routines and journalistic ethics. Using a qualitative multiple-case study design, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with journalists of varying experience levels.

Findings show that veteran journalists face reduced editorial oversight and greater pressure to prioritize speed and visibility over depth and accuracy. Mid-career reporters describe hybrid workflows that blend traditional and digital practices, while younger, digital-native journalists work in environments driven by metrics. Journalists across all platforms employ adaptive strategies such as mobile journalism kits, AI tools, and collaborative verification. 

Key challenges include balancing immediacy with accuracy, algorithm-driven story selection, fragmented audiences, digital fatigue, and limited access to official sources. In response, the study offers a Coverage and Reporting Primer for early-career journalists, emphasizing source validation, ethical decision-making, and cross-platform storytelling.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), the study underscores the vital role of political journalism in democratic accountability, offering both theoretical insights and practical tools for responsible reporting in the digital era.
